I've
updated the No Country
For Old Men reviews page with some reviews (many, many more
to come) including one from your humble web servant- my own
(I saw it last night- yay!) and our very first YKFK reader review
(thanks Matt!). Why not make a cuppa, pop
over there and have a read?
If any
of you have seen it and fancy penning a quick review email me
it and I'll be happy to post it up for fellow Coen fans to read.
I often canvass for reader input but until Matt no one has ever
taken me up on it. |

In what
has to be one of the most interesting photo shoots I think I've
ever seen the New York Times has comissioned a shoot involving
past Coen alumni including Javier Bardem, Kelly MacDonald, Jeff
Bridges, Julianne Moore, Jon Polito, Holly Hunter, Tara Reid,
Sam Elliot, Steve Buscemi and John Turturro in a series of strange
scenes. I think it's best if you just look
for yourself. Below is the accompanying text.
At
first glance, “No Country,” which is a kind of modern
western with almost mythological themes set against the landscape
of Texas, would seem to be a surprising fit with the Coens,
who are known for dark, almost surrealistic comedies like the
Oscar-winning “Fargo,” the Hollywood noir “Barton
Fink” and their ode to stoner iconoclasm, “The Big
Lebowski.” But “No Country,” like their other
movies, allowed them to create unique characters and simultaneously
twist a genre. From the start of their career, with the film
“Blood Simple” in 1984, the Coens have consistently
reinvented conventional types of cinema by tweaking and reimagining
instantly recognizable archetypes. In “No Country,”
Javier Bardem plays an unstoppable, coldblooded killer with
an existential streak. Though he is not described this way in
McCarthy’s book, the Coens pictured him with a Prince
Valiant haircut and a fastidious style of dress — a potentially
stock cinematic character transformed into a new western classic.
“He’s like the man who fell to earth,” Joel
suggested. “He’s the thing that doesn’t grow
out of that landscape.”
The
West was built on transplants, on men and women who sought to
redefine themselves in a land of opportunity. Since many of
their movies are set in that part of America, the Coen brothers
have observed and then reimagined many of those strivers, weirdos,
beauties, believers and would-be prophets. From Holly Hunter’s
baby-nabbing cop in “Raising Arizona” to Sam Elliott’s
philosophical cowboy in “The Big Lebowski,” the
Coens have created, again and again, instantly iconic creatures
of the West. In this portfolio, photographed by Finlay MacKay,
we sought to further the adventures of those Coen-devised personalities.
“We
still want to make a real period western,” Joel said.
“With no cars and in black and white. But it might be
a little narrow.” Ethan nodded. “ ‘No Country’
was kind of like a genre thing, but in a genre thing the characters
end up differently,” he said. “ ‘No Country’
is perverse. And we always like something perverse.”
Thanks

for alerting us.

The No
Country For Old Men website has been updated. Each section
is preceded by an animated clip from the film and has its own
looping music. There are wallpapers, AIM icons and a screen
saver (coming soon), lots of information on the cast, the movie
and the book, an image gallery and, of course, the three excellent
trailers.
Wallpaper
3 is particularly gorgeous and shows, once again, how good
the Coens and Roger Deakins are when working together. Shame
Deakins is not working on Burn
After Reading too, which is the first Coen brothers movie
to be without him since Barton Fink
back in 1991.
In addition
I have cheekily used the footer from the wallpapers and used
them to concoct 5 of my own desktop wallpapers. You can see
them in the No Country
Multimedia page (at the bottom). I particularly like
this one.

Looks
like A Serious Man is destined to be the Coens follow up to
Burn After Reading, My
Way news has this;
Home
Again: Coens Filming in Minnesota
Sep 29,
3:44 PM (ET)
MINNEAPOLIS
(AP) - Will the Coen brothers ever return to their native Minnesota
to film another movie? Yeah sure, you betcha! Joel and Ethan
Coen haven't made a movie in Minnesota since their 1996 Oscar-winning
"Fargo," but come March they plan to roll cameras
for "A Serious Man," set in their home town of St.
Louis Park, a Minneapolis suburb.
The brothers
helped scout locations this summer, said Lucinda Winter, executive
director of the Minnesota Film and TV Board.
"They
looked in Richfield, Brooklyn Center, maybe Hopkins - neighborhoods
that would match the one they grew up in," she said.
The film
is about a Jewish college professor during the 1960s. According
to the online entertainment journal FilmJerk.com, the main character
is bedeviled by children who lift his wallet, a wife who wants
a divorce, an intense grad student and a hot neighbor who sunbathes
in the nude. With all of that, "he starts to question the
value of life."
It's not
autobiographical but is based on the Coen brothers' experiences
here, said Bob Graf, one of the film's executive producers and
also a native Minnesotan.
Graf said
it's important to capture the uniqueness of Twin Cities suburbs.
"It's
just plain different," Graf said Friday from New York.
Thanks
to Juan on the brand
new forum for the news. Also the new forum's debut post,
may there be many more.

I'm sure
most of you will have read by now about George Clooney's iddy
biddy accident. He and his current squeeze, Sarah Larson, came
off their motorbike. Clooney has bust a rib and Larson a foot.
They're fine though and the injury will not hold up shooting
of Burn After Reading.

According
to this month's Empire
magazine the UK release date of No
Country For Old Men is January 18th NOT the previously suggested
February. So that's a bit better then ain't it? Now only 3 months
behind you lucky Americans!
The cover
of the magazine had me very, VERY excited when it plopped through
my door this morning. Emblazoned on the front - "The new
Fargo- The Coens reboot with No
Country For Old Men" I was expecting a good sized article
but, alas, just the one page (two if you count the full page

I'm sure. The fine character actor who brought us Wareing Hudsucker
(The Hudsucker Proxy) and Pappy
O'Daniel (O Brother, Where
Art Thou?) is to be honoured with a lifetime achievement
award by the Screen Actors Guild. He's 84 years old now and
has led quite a life which would, one day, make a fascinating
biopic. He served his country WWII including the Normandy landings
on Omaha beach which was, of course, made famous by Speilberg's
Saving Private Ryan and was also the sole survivor of the battle
of Malmedy in Belgium. He received three Purple Hearts and a
Silver Star for bravery. Hats off to the man and I hope he has
many more memorable roles in him.

John
Turturro has been talking about a possible Big
Lebowski Jesus Quintana spin off movie again. In an interview
with Gothamist.com he brought it up, pertinent parts below but
you can read the whole
thing here.
Back
on the subject of cult classics, The Big Lebowski has gone on
to become one. Yeah, look at that. Didn’t
do great here originally but now it has.
Were
you surprised by the lukewarm response the film received when
it came out? No, wasn’t surprised; I didn’t
realize how funny it was.
When
I first saw it in the theater I thought, “That was interesting.”
But then over repeated viewings it’s just gotten better
and better for me. One of my favorite films. It’s
really, really, really – It’s really, really good.
It’s really, really good! It’s hilarious. Maybe
someday we’ll do a little spin-off of it. We’ve
talked about it. But we’ll see.
Is
there any chance of that? I want to make a Jesus film
but Joel and Ethan… We’ve got to sit down. Maybe
next year I’ll get them to write it. We’ll see.
Was
that your idea to lick the bowling ball? A lot of those
ideas were mine, yeah. But Joel and Ethan and I kind of share
the same sensibility. And that’s why they were so helpful
on my film, editing it. Because I don’t have to explain
things to them. They understand. And they know how to make it
better.
Thanks
to John for emailing this in. |

A couple
of updates today but first, and best, thing's first- the official
No Country For Old Man
site has updated with a new "red
band" trailer. Red band basically means it starts with
a red screen instead of the familiar green, it's Restricted,
it's for adults, it has some gore in it. It almost
pitches it as a chase movie which, to an extent, it is. Fucking
amazing! I really cannot wait to see this movie!!!
Thanks

The French
DVD of Paris Je Taime is out (alas no English subtitles)
and awesome You Know, For Kids!
reader "Junior" has taken the time to email in a little
write up and also some screen grabs from the making of documentary.
Below is his write up verbatim;
"The
Coen Brothers "making of" is VERY revealing (more
than any other Coen
DVD so far) just short of a step by step process on the shooting
of the
short, as the brothers explain why they made certain choices--even
why they
chose to shoot in a subway--the initial story was going to be
a cowboy from
Texas who visits Paris for the first time but then they thought
it might
rain during shooting and they only had 2 or 3 days to film hence
they
thought up the "subway" story. They thought it was
great that the only parts
of Paris that you see beyond the subway is in the Tour Guide
Book that
Buscemi has.
We even
see the stunt reherasals and Joel & Ethan making decisions
on the
set as they shoot the short. I have never seen them as more
"human" than in
this documentary. They laugh, get excited and you see how they
figure
things out as they shoot--of course this is easier because they
have
pre-planned every detail in advance.
Steve Buscemi
is also interviewed. One funny quote is when Joel Coen says
he and Ethan were discussing working with Steve Buscemi and
how he gets
beaten up or killed when he appears in their films. They also
said the
older he gets, the more Buscemi looks like Buster Keaton to
them.
They also
interview the cinematagrpher, Bruno Delbonnel (who shot Amelie,
A
Very Long Engageent & Jean-Pierre Jeunet short films--ironic
because Jeunet
is a huge Coen fan and even "borrowed" a shot from
the Coen's Barton Fink
for his film Delicatessen--but I digress). I thought I had recognized
some
of the tricky camera moves, the look of the film, etc--it's
very Amelie!
Other crew
members and the actors are interviewed as well but those,
including Bruno's are all in French and w/o subtitles so I'll
have to wait
until a proper subtitled version comes out.
One thing
that I didn't need to understand French to learn is when everyone
comments in French and with hand gestures how Joel and Ethan
are like "one'
person.
Joel comments
that they have the ability to each go off and do different
things while filming but that doesn't necessarily translate
as more
efficiency--it's just easier on them. Ethan adds, they both
wear different
underwear, LOL!
Joel goes
on to say in the U.S. That they have worked with the same crew
for
20 years but for this they worked with all new people and they
had no idea
what they were getting into but everything was so calm and smooth.
Joel
says this is really unusual because Ethan is a real chair thrower
on the set
and like to yell at people because of a lack of sleep and that
he, Joel must
have been drugged before making this movie because he was not
aware of any
problems this time--wink, wink. They actually credit Bruno DelBonnel
and
the French crew with making it such an easy and enjoyable shoot.
You get a
sense from all the French crew and Actors that they are the
biggest Coen
Brothers fans."
Now
for the great screen grabs. In the structure of my site, I'm
not sure where to pop these yet so please just click them here
for now;

The readers
of broadsheets the Guardian and the Observer here in the UK have
been polled to determine which movies they feel are the funniest
of all time. Monty Python's hilarious The Life of Brian won out
with Airplane! at number two, but our Coens had TWO entries in
there. With a nose-bleed at the lofty height of number 7 is The
Big Lebowski and at number 38 is Raising
Arizona. The original The Ladykillers is in at number 30.
Check out the full list and I'm sure you'll agree it's the most

YAY!
Some clips of No Country For
Old Men!!! Packaged along with some brief interview clips
with Joel and Ethan. AWESOME!
The first
clip shows Tommy Lee Jones' Sheriff Bell surveying the scene
of a drug deal gone bad. The second, the menacing Chigurh (Javier
Bardem) on the phone to Moss (Josh Brolin). The third section
shows Moss at home with his girlfriend Carla Jean (Scottish
actress Kelly MacDonald) and the final one has Chirurh at his
most menacing. I think "what's the most you ever lost on

So the
Coens new film, No Country For Old Men, was shown in competition
at the Cannes Film Festival this morning and the notices are
coming in and, for the most part, they're raves! Brilliant news,
follow the links to read them for yourself and if you spot anymore
let me know and I'll add them;;
The
Guardian (UK broadsheet)
"Midway
through, I had this down as the brothers' best film since The
Big Lebowski. By the end I was wondering if it might not be
their masterpiece."
Variety.com
"A
scorching blast of tense genre filmmaking shot through with
rich veins of melancholy, down-home philosophy and dark, dark
humor, "No Country for Old Men" reps a superior match
of source material and filmmaking talent. Cormac McCarthy's
bracing and brilliant novel is gold for the Coen brothers, who
have handled it respectfully but not slavishly, using its built-in
cinematic values while cutting for brevity and infusing it with
their own touch. Result is one of the their very best films,
a bloody classic of its type destined for acclaim and potentially
robust B.O. returns upon release later in the year."
Empire
"Drenched
in blood and featuring gory scenes that will tax even some of
the hardest stomachs, No Country For Old Men is a film so good
it really hasn’t sunk in yet: in years to come people
will look back and say, oh man, why don’t they make ’em
like THIS any more? "
BBC.co.uk
"With
no sign yet of an undisputed classic in competition at this
60th Cannes, No Country for Old Men may have emerged as a frontrunner
for the trophy Joel and Ethan Coen collected for Barton Fink
in 1991. "
Hollywood
Reporter
"Audiences
will flock to see a mainstream Coen Bros. film with such a colourful
villain, but word-of-mouth about its fizzled conclusion may
to damage at the boxoffice."
Emanuel
Levy
"The
Coens are able with their distinctive filmmaking skills to transform
McCarthy's rich, wry, resonant, and often humorous storytelling
into a bravura movie, based on striking images, crisp dialogue,
darkly humorous tone, and splendid acting from all around. " |

Here's
a synopsis of the Coen's section of Paris Je T'aime...
"5.
Tuileries by Joel and Ethan Coen- Probably the funniest entry
of the bunch. I mean, from the moment Steve Buscemi turns his
head toward the camera, you can tell this one is a lighthearted
confection. Buscemi is silent all the way through. He's on the
Metro, reading a tourist book of phrases and such, when he reads
that under no circumstance should he make eye contact with anyone.
Of course he locks eyes with a couple (Julie Bataille and Axel
Kiener) who are making out across the tracks. The boyfriend
takes offense and starts yelling at Buscemi, 'what the fuck
are you looking at.' This gets the girl mad and she storms over
to Buscemi's side to make out with him and get her boyfriend
jealous. The kicker is that she has a lip growth that may or
may not be herpes. Not surprising, considering Paris is the
city for lovers of love. Eventually the boyfriend comes over
to administer a Parisian beating, which is to say, not much
of a beating at all. Tony Blundetto would've whacked this punk.
All in all, an entertaining five minutes."
The title
translates thus;
Tuileries
|'twel?re(z)| |?twil?ri(z)| |?twi?l?ri| |tHil?i| (also Tuileries
Gardens)
formal gardens next to the Louvre in Paris. The gardens are
all that remain of the Tuileries Palace, a royal residence begun
in 1564 and burned down in 1871 during the Commune of Paris.
ORIGIN French, literally ‘Tile works,’ so named
because the palace was built on the site of an ancient tile
works.

Things are
hotting up for Burn After Reading. The frankly awesome John Malkovich
has joined George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand in
the already brilliant cast. He will play the main part in the
movie of a CIA agent who loses a disc containing sensitive information.
This is getting more and more interesting every day! Malkovich,

As if
all this wasn't enough, there's some details on the Coen's follow
up to Burn After Reading, A Serious Man courtesy of JoBlo.com...
"Last
week when we first told you about the Coen brothers' next film
A SERIOUS MAN, we had no details to share. What is this mystery
film that was only described as a dark comedy? We knew nothing
then but today, we've got some exclusive word on the flick.
JoBlo spies are reporting that while filming on A SERIOUS MAN
isn't set to begin until after BURN AFTER READING wraps (the
next Coen film with George Clooney and Brad Pitt starring),
one particular scene is being shot this month. The Coens are
assembling for only a few days to shoot a scene that takes place
in early 20th century Poland and is entirely in Yiddish. Here's
what we now about the scene: A man named Velvel is walking home
and meets a stranger he soon recognizes to be a prominent rabbi.
Velvel invites the man back to his home for dinner but when
they arrive, his wife believes the Rabbi to be a Dybbuk (which
Wikipedia tells me is a "malicious possessing spirit").
Velvel is understandly confused and the Rabbi seems amused by
the claims but the wife insists the real Rabbi died three years
prior. Desperate to save her family, Velvel's wife resorts to
drastic measures, much to the horror of her husband. Yikes,
sounds pretty messed up! Only the Coens could turn this around
and make it somehow comedic. Of course this is just one scene
and it's still unclear how it fits into the rest of the production.
Stay tuned for more on this as word leaks out."
Hmmm, why
are they shooting a scent this month? Does one of the characters
have to alter their appearance? Weight maybe? Grow a beard?
Hmmm... |

So Coen
brothers movies are like buses. You wait for ages and then,
bam, three come at once!
Hot on
the heels of the news regarding Burn After Reading comes news
of the Coen's 14th movie- A Serious Man. Nothing is know about
it as yet other than it is "a dark comedy in the vein of
Fargo" which cannot be a bad thing.

Lots
of people got in touch to point me in the direction of a featurette
over at Apple's site. The Coens have been using Apple's editing
software, Final Cut Pro, for some time now and have filmed a
short interview for Apple. It mainly concentrates on the use
of colour in O Brother, Where Art Thou? but does contain shots
from No Country For Old Men
of Moss being persued by a truck (I'm doubtful that the shots
of a city and taxi are from the movie but you never know). Very
exciting indeed- the first footage from the next Coen movie!!!

The LA
Times and JoBlo
have the same story, it seems Ethan is going it alone. He and
his wife, editor Tricia Cooke, have penned what is billed as
a "lesbian, road-trip, action, sex comedy" called
Drive-Away Dykes to be directed by Allison Anders. I'll hand
over to The LA Times for the synopsis...
"When
Marion, a skirt-chasing party girl, gets kicked out after her
cop girlfriend finds her in bed with another woman, she convinces
her buttoned-down friend Jamie to let her come along on a get-away-for-a-few-days
drive-away car assignment from Philadelphia to Miami. Packed
along for the ride are Jamie's crush on Marion, Marion's unrelenting
desire to cruise every lesbian bar on the eastern seaboard,
and — since this is Coen territory — a severed head
in a hatbox, a mystery briefcase full of plaster phalluses,
a mélange of angry pursuers, an evil senator, a bitter
ex-girlfriend and loads of hot boyless sex."
Coen says,
"The sensibility is exploitive but innocent. We were both
taken with the title and, as with old exploitation films, it
all derived from that. We figured, 'All right, what kind of
movie has this title?' "
JoBlo questions
if this could be the greatest movie ever and mentions an unofficial
website which appears not to work anymore. Perhaps it has
been taken down but which apparently featured story boards and
character information. If anyone managed to see/save any of
this info I'd love to hear about it.

Apparenlty
Joel Coen and his wife Frances McDormand escaped a fire on Wednesday!!!
This from IMDB news...
"Actor Jake Gyllenhaal and his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal escaped
without injury after being caught up in a fire early on Wednesday
at a California inn. The two were staying at Manka's Inverness
Lodge in Marin County for Christmas when a tree fell on the structure,
sparking the fire. According to Marin County Fire Department Battlion
Chief Mike Giannini, "From my perspective, it looks like a total
loss of the main lodge and the restaurant." Neighbor Judy Prokupek,
who witnessed the devastation, said guests were seen running out
of the inn at around 2:43 am, adding, "They weren't dressed to
come out. It was early." Chef and co-owner Daniel Delong said
the Brokeback Mountain star assisted with the recovery efforts
saying, "Jake was helping me pull things out of the fire." Other
well-known guests at the inn were Fargo star Frances McDormand
and her husband Joel Coen. No injuries were reported."
Wonder if it would have been so widely reported had the young
and pretty Gyllenhaals not been there...

Well

Old Men!
IMAGE

IMAGE
ONE, on set image of director's chairs
I'm not ashamed to say that I stole these images from an article
on the New York Times website which you can read by following
the link on the right, however I have added the pertinent parts
below.
UNTIL six months ago W. E. Love, also known as Chip, had not
particularly intended to carry on his family’s cinematic legacy.
Then Joel and Ethan Coen came to town.
The Coens — the writing and directing team behind “Fargo,” “The
Big Lebowski” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” — visited Marfa
last March, as they searched for ranch land on which to film their
latest project, an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s 2005 novel
“No Country for Old Men.” Set in the late 1970’s in West Texas,
the story is an ultraviolent neo-western about an antelope hunter,
Llewelyn Moss (played by Josh Brolin), who stumbles across $2
million in a drug deal gone awry. Moss takes off with the money,
prompting a chase up and down the Mexican border, as a psychopathic
hit man (Javier Bardem) follows him, leaving a slew of bodies
in his wake. On their trails is the aging local sheriff (Tommy
Lee Jones).
The president of Marfa’s only bank, Mr. Love also owns a cattle
ranch and gave the Coens a tour of his property when they scouted
locations last spring. As the filmmakers and Mr. Love sat on his
back porch talking, Joel Coen asked if Mr. Love would be interested
in playing a small role in the movie.
“He said, ‘It’s pretty easy — it’ll just take a couple of days,’
” Mr. Love recalled recently. “ ‘But there’s two bad things: You
have to fall down, and you get killed.’ ” (The part Mr. Coen envisioned
for Mr. Love was one of the hit man’s victims, who comes to a
grotesquely bloody end.) Mr. Love warned the Coens that he wasn’t
an actor: the only time he’d performed was in a high school production
of “The Wizard of Oz.” “They said, ‘Perfect!’ ” he recalled. “I’m
kind of bashful, but I thought it’d be a real goof.”
So on the afternoon of May 24, Mr. Love stood on a desolate desert
highway west of town, surrounded by cattle ranches peppered with
cactuses and jackrabbits, and, in front of a collection of cameras
and crew, was shot in the head with a cattle stun gun by Mr. Bardem.
Dying on camera was harder than he expected, he said, and he was
disheartened by the number of takes the directors called for.
“I wanted to do well for those guys because they were so nice,”
he said. “I felt a huge responsibility not to stink.”
The producers of the film said the presence of two (the other
being Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood) major projects,
bankrolled by the same studio, Paramount Vantage (with Miramax),
and filmed in the same tiny town, was just a coincidence.
“In a lot of ways movies are run as separate companies,” said
Robert Graf, the producer of “No Country for Old Men.” That both
movies would be in Marfa simultaneously, he said, “was one of
those things that people just sort of found out. It dawned on
us slowly.”
While the landscape was the main draw for both productions, the
town of Marfa was a factor too. An eccentric, fiercely independent
place that’s become a haven for artists and art tourists, Marfa
has seen an upsurge in galleries, boutique hotels and print coverage
in the last 10 years. The Coens became enamored with Marfa, “as
a lot of people are,” Mr. Graf said. “There are a lot of really
interesting and fun people in Marfa.”
Apart from a handful of scenes that used locals’ cars as background
vehicles, Mr. Love was the only Marfan to appear in the Coens’
film.

Jesus
Quintanta/Bernie Bernbaum/Barton Fink himself, John Turturro,
has, as I'm sure you're aware by now, directed his third movie,
Romance
& Cigarettes which is executive produced by the Coen brothers.
You can read an interview he did at the NFT in London at the link
on the right. There are a few mentions of the Coen brothers, such
as the fact that it was their idea for Turturro to cast James
Gandolfini in the movie.. |

Almost
in celebration of the nice new web space and domain name, I have
finally gotten around to updating The
Big Lebowski's multimedia page! It's a truly massive update
containing over 350 high quality images mainly taken directly
from the DVD. I hope you all enjoy it because it represents hours
of work on my part. |
