Hello Coen Brothers and Sisters,

Great news today. FX network has wisely chosen to greenlight a Coen Brother’s executively produced television program based on the 1996 masterpiece Fargo. Nice! According to Deadline Hollywood, FX president John Landgraf made the announcement sometime prior to the writing of this article.

Could it be good? Well the Coen Brothers are involved in the production, so yeah… it could. Will it be better than the 2003 version directed by Kathy Bates? You betcha!

While sadly the Coen brothers will not be developing their story of a World War II soldier surviving a plane crash and the impossible odds that follow, they will soon be developing the story of a World War II soldier surviving a plane crash and the impossible odds that follow. But it won’t star Brad Pitt. But it will be directed by Angelina Jolie. But it won’t be called, “To the White Sea”. But it will be called, “Unbroken”. Wait what?

The Hollywood Reporter is um… reporting that the Coens have signed on to develop the script for Angelina’s directorial debut based on the true life events of Lou Zamerini. True life events that sound kinda like the novel they worked to adapt and film with Chad Brad Pitt.

Wow. Art imitates life. More details are available at The Hollywood Reporter. Btw, does anyone know some of the other films the Coens have script written? They’ve mentioned their role as hired guns before, but aren’t always listed in the credits.

Well Kids,
It happened again. For the 10th time in 18 years, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has given out the Oscar for Best Cinematography to… the wrong person. The Coen Brother’s frequent collaborator, Roger Deakins (a true master of light, color, and shade) was once again denied his rightful place on stage.

As evidenced by his previous nominations, he’ll surely be back in the running soon.

Academy Award for Best Cinematography
1994: The Shawshank Redemption (nominated)
1996: Fargo (nominated)
1997: Kundun (nominated)
2000: O Brother, Where Art Thou? (nominated)
2001: The Man Who Wasn’t There (nominated)
2007: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (nominated)
2007: No Country for Old Men (nominated)
2008: The Reader (nominated)
2010: True Grit (nominated)
2012: Skyfall (nominated)

By the way, if you haven’t visited Mr. Deakins’ official message boards in a while, now would be a great time drop by.

The first official image from the Coen brothers forthcoming movie, A Serious Man has been released. It features main character, Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) on his roof partaking in his favourite passtime…

Terrific news indeed- the Coen brothers latest creation, A Serious Man, has been confirmed as part of the line up of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival as a “Special Presentation” in what will be its World Premiere. It’ll be showing between 10th and 19th of September though the actual date and time appear to have not yet been set.

Just think- the World Premiere of the new Coen movie is only around 6 weeks away!!! SIX WEEKS!

Thanks to Eugene for the nod.

Veteran actor Harve Presnell has succumbed to cancer. He died on Tuesday at the age of 75. He had a long and distinguised career on stage and screen but is best know to us here on YKFK as Jerry Lungergaard’s (William H. Macy) father-in-law, Wade Gustafson in the Coen brothers’ 1996 sleeper hit Fargo.

IGN.com have reviewed the forthcoming 2-disc Blu-ray release of No Country For Old Men which is out in the US tomorrow and should be region free (this is unconfirmed at the moment but the last release was). Initially I was resistant to this release on account of the fact that this is the movie’s second Blu-ray release ALREADY. But is seems it might actually be worth a purchase.

The review, of course, gives the movie itself 10/10 and 9/10 for the both the audio and visual quality but most interstingly is the 10/10 given for the extra features. Apparenly the interviews contained on the first disc (2nd disc is just the digital copy) run to around 5 hours in total!!!

This time from one Blake Loosli who seems to specialise in caricature/portraiture. He’s created work based on a wide range of subject matter including quite a lot of movie related stuff, not least of which are his amazing No Country For Old Men, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Walter Sobchak pieces.

Check out all of his excellent work here. Spotted on The Lebowski Podcast’s Twitter feed.

Andyrama has kindly agreed to make his three tremendouns, themed, alternative DVD covers available for download, in hi-res, right here on You Know, For Kids! You can download them using the links below (once they’re opne, right click them and choose “save as”)…

Some printing tips from Andy- “I would recommend that your readers print them at full size, without checking any “fit to page” links or the like, as these will distort the dimensions as not to fit in cases. These should print nicely within the margins of A4 sheets. However, those in North America should be aware that it may not fit within the margins of Letter size paper depending on their printers’ capabilities. In their case, they should try to print to a Legal (8.5″x14″) or Tabloid (11″x17″) size sheet if they are able.

After that, just cut ‘em out, and stick them in cases. ”

Please let me know how you get on with these, I have printed these myself and will post some pics when I’ve united them with my DVDs at home! Also do stop by Andyrama.net to check out his other artwork, he has a lot of cool stuff.

Thanks again to Andy for letting us do this. Here’s hoping he creates more in the future. It would be great to have a unified look for the Coen brother’s DVDs.

Not sure if this is genuine or final but I just found this;
