Joel and Ethan Coen have been nominated in the category Original Screenplay for A Serious Man at this year’s Writer’s Guild of America awards to be held on 20th February simultaneously in LA and New York. Here is the complete list of nominees;

Joel and Ethan Coen have been awarded the Best Original Screenplay gong for A Serious Man at the National Society of Film Critics awards.

A Serious Man star Michael Stuhlbarg has been honoured with the Chopin Virtuosos Award at this year’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival along with  Carey Mulligan (for An Education), Saoirse Ronan (for The Lovely Bones) and Gabourey Sidibe (for Precious).

Of Stuhlbarg’s performance SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling said ; “Best known for his talents on the Broadway stage, Michael Stuhlbarg’s performance in “A Serious Man” as a suburban father in 1967 whose life crumbles right before him is thought-provoking and allows us to laugh at life’s seemingly insurmountable troubles.”

The nominations for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards have just been announced and A Serious Man star Michael Stuhlbarg is up in the BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL category! Unfortunately this is the movie’s only nomination.

A Serious Man has been nominated in two categories for this year’s Critic’s Choice Movie Awards. It has been nominated for Best Picture and Joel and Ethan Coen have been nominated for the Best Original Screenplay gong.

Leading the charge with the most nominations with 10 apiece are Quentin Tarantino’s awesome Inglourious Basterds and Rob Marshall’s Nine. King of the World, James Cameron’s Avatar has 9 noms with The Hurt Locker and Up In The Air having 8.

I sometimes wonder if the Coens are bored with Best Screenplay nominations and awards…

The American Film Institute has listed the Coen brothers’ latest movie, A Serious Man, as one of 10 movies of the year. The AFI’s intent is to generate a sort of visual history of American cinema by adding movies and TV shows of worth to the collection every year. Here is their explanation of what they do;

“AFI was created to protect and preserve the legacy of the moving image art form so that future generations will have a greater understanding and appreciation for the proud heritage reflected in the realities of a new modern day.

Each year, AFI AWARDS honors excellence in the moving image arts within the context of a Year in Review. One of AFI’s national mandates is the creation of an annual almanac that records and preserves the evolution of the moving image arts in the 21st century.”

Anyway, A Serious Man was joined by Coraline, The Hangover, The Hurt Locker, The Messanger, Precious, A Single Man, Sugar, Up and Up In The Air. Additionally, No Country For Old Men made the cut in 2007’s awards and Roger Deakins was awarded their Cinematographer of the Year award for The Man Who Wasn’t There back in 2001.

The National Board of Review has announced it 2009 award winners and A Serious Man scooped the gone for Best Original Screenplay.

The Coen brothers’ latest movie, A Serious Man has been nominated for two awards at the 25th Film Independent Spirit Awards. The nominations for Joel and Ethan Coen in the Best Director category and for the ridiculously awesome, Roger Deakins in the Best Cinematography category. In addition the movie has been awarded their Robert Altman Award which is a special one awarded to just one film’s the director, casting director and its ensemble cast. The award ceremony takes place on Friday March 5th 2010.
The Coens have been successful at the Spirit Awards before. In 1997 Fargo won the awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Female Lead (Frances McDormand), Best Male Lead (William H. Macy) and Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins – told you he was awesome!). In 1986 Blood Simple was nominated for Best Picture but was beaten by Martin Scorsese’s After Hours while that movie and Blood Simple shared the gong for Best Director, M. Emmet Walsh also won the Best Male Lead award for his creepy, slimey portrayal of Loren Visser.

Joel and Ethan Coen’s latest movie, A Serious Man, is up for two awards at this year’s Gotham Independent Film Awards. The movie is up against Katharine Bigelow’s ‘Hurt Locker’, Robert Siegel’s ‘Big Fan’, Cherien Dabris’ ‘Amreeka’ and Sebastian Silver’s ‘The Maid’ for the Best Feature gong. It is also up for the Best Ensemble Performance award. The awards ceremony takes place in New York City on 30th November.

The Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival has announced shortlists for all four of its awards, two of which are brand new, one of which the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man has been nominated for. In opposition for the newly created award are Wes Anderson’s awesome looking Roald Dahl adaptation “The Fantastic Mr. Fox”, artist Sam Taylor Wood’s debut movie about John Lennon’s life “Nowhere Boy”, John Hillcoat’s adaptation of the heart-breaking Cormac McCarthy (who wrote No Country For Old Men incidentally) novel “The Road”, Robert Connonlly’s “Balibo”, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “Micmacs”, Jacques Audiard’s “A Prophet”, Jane Campion’s “Bright Star” and Micheal Haneke’s “The White Ribbon”.

The awards will be, err, awarded on 28th October.
