Slash Film reckon that five time Coen collaborator, John Goodman has joined the cast of Inside Llewyn Davis, which would make it six appearances in the brothers’ movies, following turns in Raising Arizona, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy (kinda!), The Big Lebowski and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (not forgetting his role in their stage-based “radio play” Sawbones, their section of Theater of the New Ear). I’m so pleased to see them returning to what was once their repertory company, and I hope for roles for John Turturro, Frances McDormand and Steve Buscemi too! But maybe I’m being greedy!
Also in the frame to join the cast (according to Empire) is one Justin Timberlake! I know, I know, but after his stellar turn in The Social Network, we can’t doubt his acting chops.

that’s great news about goodman!
i’ve been seeing the timberlake talk– i hope he doesn’t take the part. i think something of this magnitude and aesthetic going to him will end up being a waste. i mean– the coens are always great at casting and always seem to know what they’re going to get out of their actors, but i’m just not on the side of the camp that thinks he has acting chops. i saw the social network and he just seems phony and just… lame.
so, i guess it’s sounding more and more confirmed that he’ll be taking the part they offered him, but man i wish he wouldn’t. maybe he can pass through a movie like the social network, but the coens write parts for the most dynamic of actors to sink their teeth into– and this is one of the main three leads. the rest of the cast sounds exciting and interesting, but i can’t even see timber’s singing matching aesthetics. i’m sure it’ll be fine, but how good could someone else be?
anyway, while i find this news depressing, i still really really look forward to the movie. before the news, i felt like this could be one of the coens’ most interesting subjects and thus could prove to be an amazing film– especially based on the feelings they’ve described the film as having.

Yeah I know what you mean about Timberlake BUT I do trust the Coens, especially when it comes to casting. I really cannot think of any one actor in their entire oeuvre who I think was miscast…
