Archive for March, 2009

I think this only applies to readers in the UK but Sky Movies Indie is showing a “season” of Coen brothers movies building up to their premiere of No Country For Old Men showing on Sky Movies Premiere in HD. They’ve dubbed the season “Scream with the Coen brothers” and have put together this frankly ACE trailer which is a compedium of one of the Coens’ recurring themes- people screaming. It starts on 30th March and end on 12th April.

Information on the Sky site is not very well organised but I’ve been able to root this out;

The Hudsucker Proxy is showing on Monday 30th March at 20:00,

O Brother, Where Art Thou? on Monday 30th at 22:00 and Tuesday 31st at 20:00,

Blood Simple on Tuesday 31st at 22:00,

The Big Lebowski is showing on Wednesday 1st April at 22:00,

Raising Arizona is showing on Wednesday 1st April at 20:00 and Thursday 2nd April at 2:00

Beyond that, scrabbled together information I’m not sure if they’re showing more of their movies or not, certainly there are clips from both Barton Fink and Fargo in the trailer but they have no listings on the site. Perhaps those with a Sky subscription could clarify?

Thanks to Will for the info.

Just found this little blog post in my RSS feed, which says that, during the production of the Coen brothers’ forthcoming A Serious Man a whopping 11.1 tons of waste was either composted or recycled. Well done to all involved!

I like to be as green as I can so this made me feel all warm inside.

In a bizarre twist it looks like the zombie article at the Daily Mail from a year ago could have risen from the grave for a good reason. Variety are reporting that the Coen brothers are indeed set to re-make True Grit next. It has apparenlty stepped ahead of “The Yiddish Policemen’s Union” in the pecking order.

Good news is that they plan to stick more closely to the plot of the original Charles Portis novel focusing on the story of a 14 year-old girl rather than follow the plot of the John Wayne movie.

Bad news is- I was really looking forward to ”The Yiddish Policemen’s Union” because the novel is great and right up the Coen’s alley so to speak.

So, the Coens set to do a Western… could be interesting. Now I must read the book…

Thanks to Calvin and Erenik for tipping me off.

I don’t know how or why this is happening but this article from February 2008 from the God awful Daily Mail is showing up all over the place at the moment. I’ve had a lot of emails about it and it’s showing up on RSS feeds, blogs, Twitterings, you name it. I reported on it on March 5th 2008.

Just thought I had better mention it. Personally I don’t believe it. I live in the UK and know how the press here has a habit of making up stupid crap and certainly would not put this past the bastian of journalistic integrity- the Daily Mail. I guess we’ll see if this is true or not in time.

The internet is a funny place…

I love The Big Lebowski, I really do. Everytime I see something new like this it just makes me smile ear to ear. Here’s a short, 3 minute interview with Jesus Quintana himself – John Turturro where he speaks about his working relationship with Joel and Ethan Coen. Amusingly he states that after trying out all the different, crazy things on set (the ball shining, the ball licking, the Hotel California dance) he was “completely embarrassed” when he saw the final cut. Also, intriguingly, he states that the Coens like his idea for a Lebowski Jesus spin off where “Jesus gets out of jail and drives a school bus”. Anyway here’s the clip…

Thanks to Sandra for mailing the link in.

This time from one Blake Loosli who seems to specialise in caricature/portraiture. He’s created work based on a wide range of subject matter including quite a lot of movie related stuff, not least of which are his amazing No Country For Old Men, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Walter Sobchak pieces.

Check out all of his excellent work here. Spotted on The Lebowski Podcast’s Twitter feed.

Andyrama has kindly agreed to make his three tremendouns, themed, alternative DVD covers available for download, in hi-res, right here on You Know, For Kids! You can download them using the links below (once they’re opne, right click them and choose “save as”)…

Some printing tips from Andy- “I would recommend that your readers print them at full size, without checking any “fit to page” links or the like, as these will distort the dimensions as not to fit in cases. These should print nicely within the margins of A4 sheets. However, those in North America should be aware that it may not fit within the margins of Letter size paper depending on their printers’ capabilities. In their case, they should try to print to a Legal (8.5″x14″) or Tabloid (11″x17″) size sheet if they are able.

After that, just cut ‘em out, and stick them in cases. ”

Please let me know how you get on with these, I have printed these myself and will post some pics when I’ve united them with my DVDs at home! Also do stop by Andyrama.net to check out his other artwork, he has a lot of cool stuff.

Thanks again to Andy for letting us do this. Here’s hoping he creates more in the future. It would be great to have a unified look for the Coen brother’s DVDs.

Just a note to show you something I just stumbled upon (without using stumbleupon.com), the artwork of Andrew O. Ellis, or Andyrama. Clearly he’s a fan of the Coen brothers as he’s designed alternative DVD covers for three of their films (The Hudsucker Proxy, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and, of course, The Big Lebowski) and also an awesome box set cover. Check them out below and visit his site for more of his work.

I love it when the internet does this to me. I follow one story, follow a link within, notice some ace Hudsucker artwork I’ve never seen, follow that to more awesomeness. Great stuff.
