No Cannes glory for the Coens this year. No Country For Old Men was in competition but did not win. The Palme d’Or went to Romanian abortion movie 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. Julian Schnabel won the best director award for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

Cack! Disappointing AND we have to wait months to see the movie! Boo! Oh and if anyone responsible for the official Cannes Film Festival website is reading- you should be ashamed of yourself, the site is terrible.

YAY! Some clips of No Country For Old Men!!! Packaged along with some brief interview clips with Joel and Ethan. AWESOME!

The first clip shows Tommy Lee Jones’ Sheriff Bell surveying the scene of a drug deal gone bad. The second, the menacing Chigurh (Javier Bardem) on the phone to Moss (Josh Brolin). The third section shows Moss at home with his girlfriend Carla Jean (Scottish actress Kelly MacDonald) and the final one has Chirurh at his most menacing. I think “what’s the most you ever lost on a coin toss” will become much quoted. Check them out using the links on the right.

Behind the Coens during their bits is the poster for the movie too, I can’t wait for a hi-res version of that to show up!

More clips! Slightly longer versions of the four listed below plus one of Moss at the drug deal site (extrait 1).

Bad news I’m afraid. NBC Universal have been in touch with me to demand that I remove the script for Burn After Reading, now I’m only a bloke on his own so I immediately complied with their cease and desist order. Ah well, can’t really blame them for wanting to protect their IP.

Sorry all.

So the Coens new film, No Country For Old Men, was shown in competition at the Cannes Film Festival this morning and the notices are coming in and, for the most part, they’re raves! Brilliant news, follow the links to read them for yourself and if you spot anymore let me know and I’ll add them;;

The Guardian (UK broadsheet)

“Midway through, I had this down as the brothers’ best film since The Big Lebowski. By the end I was wondering if it might not be their masterpiece.”

Variety.com

“A scorching blast of tense genre filmmaking shot through with rich veins of melancholy, down-home philosophy and dark, dark humor, “No Country for Old Men” reps a superior match of source material and filmmaking talent. Cormac McCarthy’s bracing and brilliant novel is gold for the Coen brothers, who have handled it respectfully but not slavishly, using its built-in cinematic values while cutting for brevity and infusing it with their own touch. Result is one of the their very best films, a bloody classic of its type destined for acclaim and potentially robust B.O. returns upon release later in the year.”

Empire

“Drenched in blood and featuring gory scenes that will tax even some of the hardest stomachs, No Country For Old Men is a film so good it really hasn’t sunk in yet: in years to come people will look back and say, oh man, why don’t they make ’em like THIS any more? “

BBC.co.uk

“With no sign yet of an undisputed classic in competition at this 60th Cannes, No Country for Old Men may have emerged as a frontrunner for the trophy Joel and Ethan Coen collected for Barton Fink in 1991. “

Hollywood Reporter

“Audiences will flock to see a mainstream Coen Bros. film with such a colourful villain, but word-of-mouth about its fizzled conclusion may to damage at the boxoffice.”

Emanuel Levy

“The Coens are able with their distinctive filmmaking skills to transform McCarthy’s rich, wry, resonant, and often humorous storytelling into a bravura movie, based on striking images, crisp dialogue, darkly humorous tone, and splendid acting from all around. “

No Country For Old Men is showing in competition at Cannes on Saturday 19th May at 11.30. Let’s hope it wins!

WOW! Guess what I was emailed today? You’ll never guess so I’m just gonna tell ya- the script for Burn After Reading! The Coen’s ain’t even started shooting this yet, hell it’s still casting, and now we Coen nerds have the script. Oh happy days! I haven’t even read it myself yet I was so keen to share it with you all.

Thanks to Matt for mailing it over and sharing the wealth. I suggest you read it and then burn it.

EDIT: I had to remove it, see later post. Sorry.

I thought I’d posted this up but perhaps I didn’t. You can buy Walter and The Dude action figures. They’re pretty cool in a super-deformed kinda way.

Thanks to Bunnie and Eugene for the heads up.

As if all this wasn’t enough, there’s some details on the Coen’s follow up to Burn After Reading, A Serious Man courtesy of JoBlo.com…

“Last week when we first told you about the Coen brothers’ next film A SERIOUS MAN, we had no details to share. What is this mystery film that was only described as a dark comedy? We knew nothing then but today, we’ve got some exclusive word on the flick. JoBlo spies are reporting that while filming on A SERIOUS MAN isn’t set to begin until after BURN AFTER READING wraps (the next Coen film with George Clooney and Brad Pitt starring), one particular scene is being shot this month. The Coens are assembling for only a few days to shoot a scene that takes place in early 20th century Poland and is entirely in Yiddish. Here’s what we now about the scene: A man named Velvel is walking home and meets a stranger he soon recognizes to be a prominent rabbi. Velvel invites the man back to his home for dinner but when they arrive, his wife believes the Rabbi to be a Dybbuk (which Wikipedia tells me is a “malicious possessing spirit”). Velvel is understandly confused and the Rabbi seems amused by the claims but the wife insists the real Rabbi died three years prior. Desperate to save her family, Velvel’s wife resorts to drastic measures, much to the horror of her husband. Yikes, sounds pretty messed up! Only the Coens could turn this around and make it somehow comedic. Of course this is just one scene and it’s still unclear how it fits into the rest of the production. Stay tuned for more on this as word leaks out.” – JoBlo

Hmmm, why are they shooting a scene this month? Does one of the characters have to alter their appearance? Weight maybe? Grow a beard? Hmmm…

Things are hotting up for Burn After Reading. The frankly awesome John Malkovich has joined George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand in the already brilliant cast. He will play the main part in the movie of a CIA agent who loses a disc containing sensitive information. This is getting more and more interesting every day! Malkovich, Malkovich.
