YEAR 1990 RUNNING TIME 1hr 55m MPAA R BBFC 18 BUDGET $14m US BOX OFFICE $5,080,409
SYNOPSIS: The year is 1929; the place is a gangster-ridden American city run by Leo (Albert Finney). But the real power lies with Tom (Gabriel Byrne) - the man behind the man. Their friendship is severed when they both fall in love with the same wonan and a bloody gang war erupts - a war set to tear the city apart.

NOTES: The Coen brothers suffered such sever writer's block when penning this masterpiece that they took a break. During the break they wrote a movie about writer's block- Barton Fink.

The movie pretty much has it's own language. There's a lot of slang in the script. Click here to check out the Miller's Crossing Dictionary.

Frances McDormand has an uncredited cameo as the mayor's secretary. She flashes Tom with a very saucy look on her way past him.

The building Tom lives in is called The Barton Arms, a clear reference to the movie Barton Fink.

The Coen brothers wrote the part of Leo specifically for Trey Wilson, who played Nathan Arizona in Raising Arizona. Unfortunately he died shortly before production began so Albert Finney took over the role.

In early versions of the script Eddie Dane was calles Bluepoint.

On the subject of Finney if you look closely at the scene where Tom bursts into the women's washroom you may notice Finney dressed in drag...

Gabriel Byrne was supposed to have an American accent in Miller's Crossing, but was having trouble reading the Coen's dialogue with the accent, so abandoned it in favour of his normal brogue.
